Bipartisan Bill Proposes Mandatory Inclusion of AM Radio in New Vehicles
A new bill proposes a mandatory inclusion of AM radio in all new cars, with a requirement for disclosure if a vehicle lacks AM radio functionality. AM radio has long been a foundational broadcasting technology, and numerous radio stations continue to rely on AM frequencies for their transmissions. By retaining AM radio in new cars, compatibility with these legacy stations is ensured, allowing users to continue receiving their broadcasts. While the demand for AM radio has declined in some areas due to the popularity of FM and digital media, there are valid reasons for including AM radio in new car models. This inclusion caters to existing infrastructure, emergency communication requirements, rural coverage needs, and diverse programming preferences.
AM radio serves as a popular medium for broadcasting news, talk shows, sports, and music. Although it offers lower audio fidelity compared to FM radio, which utilizes frequency variations for transmitting audio signals, AM radio possesses the advantage of wider coverage with fewer transmitters, making it suitable for long-range communication. While the popularity of AM radio has diminished in certain regions due to advancements in digital technologies and FM radio's superior audio quality, it remains relevant in many parts of the world, particularly for emergency broadcasts, news, and niche programming.
