Teamsters President Shakes Up Republican National Convention
Sean O’Brien, President of the Teamsters Union, made quite a splash on the first night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. He’s the first Teamsters president to speak at such an event, and it stirred up some controversy both within his union and beyond.
O’Brien’s speech, praising former President Trump and Republicans like Senator Josh Hawley and Representative Nicole Malliotakis, didn’t sit well with some union leaders. He also took a hard stance against corporate America, calling out the firing of workers for labor organizing as “economic terrorism.”
While his speech started strong, the crowd’s enthusiasm dwindled as some attendees turned their attention to Trump, who was seated in the back. Many in labor circles argue Trump wasn’t supportive of unions during his presidency, whereas President Biden has been a strong ally, signing a significant bailout for the Teamsters' pension fund.
One Teamster, Keith Gleason from Chicago, voiced his disapproval on social media, highlighting that Biden, not Trump, had saved their pensions.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
If you’re in the transportation and logistics industry, keeping an eye on labor movements is crucial. Union actions and leadership can impact everything from worker availability to shipping schedules. O’Brien’s unconventional speech at the RNC hints at a potential shift in union politics, which could trickle down to affect your workforce and operations.

Teamsters' top dog cozying up to the GOP? This might signal a shake-up in labor politics that could impact shipping schedules and worker dynamics. Buckle up…
ExxonMobil's Big Bet on Guyana's Oil Future
ExxonMobil is making major moves in Guyana with a new project set to start in 2029, aiming to boost the country's oil production to over 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd). The Hammerhead project involves drilling up to 30 wells in the Stabroek Block, where Exxon already churns out more than 600,000 bpd.
Before the drilling starts, the project needs to clear environmental reviews and get approval from the Guyanese government. An Environmental Impact Assessment has been mandated, marking Exxon's seventh deepwater venture in the block.
Production at Hammerhead is expected to kick off in 2029 using a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, with an output of 120,000 to 180,000 bpd. This comes hot on the heels of Exxon's final investment decision on the $12.7 billion Whiptail project, set to begin production in 2027 and add 250,000 bpd to Guyana’s oil capacity.
Liam Mallon, president of ExxonMobil Upstream Company, highlighted that Whiptail will push Guyana's production capacity to around 1.3 million bpd.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
For those of us in the transportation and logistics industry, ExxonMobil’s big investment in Guyana is a game changer. Increased oil production can shake up fuel prices and availability, directly affecting our costs and planning. Plus, the infrastructure needed for such massive projects can open up new logistics opportunities and challenges in the region.
🔥 OUR HOT TAKE?
Exxon's big moves in Guyana mean more oil in the pipeline. Expect shifts in fuel prices and new logistics routes popping up. Stay ahead of the curve! 🚚🌍
Gebrüder Weiss Expands to Denver
Exciting news in the logistics world! Austria's oldest transport and logistics company, Gebrüder Weiss, founded way back in 1474, has just opened a new hub in Denver. This strategic move aims to strengthen their presence in the Intermountain West region. With Denver's prime location for trucking, air cargo, and easy airport access, it's the perfect spot for expansion.
Leading the charge is Don Derbin, a seasoned local logistics pro. Gebrüder Weiss, which started as a messenger service across the Alps, now boasts 180 branches worldwide and employs around 8,400 people. In 2022, they handled an impressive 15.5 million consignments.
Mark McCullough, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss North America, is thrilled about the new hub and Derbin’s addition to the team. This Denver hub will boost access to the West Coast and Midwest, building on their recent acquisition of Cargo-Link in Salt Lake City. This allows them to offer specialized shipments from North and South China directly to Salt Lake City. The new office is located in Denver's Central Park neighborhood.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
In the transportation and logistics industry, Gebrüder Weiss setting up a hub in Denver is a big deal. It means more efficient routes, better access to the West Coast and Midwest, and potentially faster delivery times. This expansion can open up new opportunities for partnerships and improve the overall logistics network in the region.
