Toyota Shareholders Reject Climate Change Performance Proposal

Toyota shareholders rejected a proposal urging the automaker to take stronger action against climate change during their annual general meeting. The proposal, initiated by Danish investment fund AkademikerPension, accused Toyota of lobbying against efforts to phase out internal combustion engines globally. Shareholders overwhelmingly rejected the proposal, with the majority of Toyota shares held by the company, its group companies, retired employees, and others aligned with the company's viewpoint. The resolution also questioned the reappointment of Toyota's chairman, Akio Toyoda, criticizing the company's perceived lag in transitioning to battery electric vehicles.

Toyota executives defended their environmental record, emphasizing their commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and pursuing various energy options, including hybrids, plug-ins, and hydrogen-powered vehicles. While some major U.S. pensions supported the climate change proposal, most shareholders at the meeting praised Toyota's efforts and Toyoda's leadership. Outside the meeting, Greenpeace activists advocated for a faster transition away from fossil fuel cars. The rejection of the proposal highlights the ongoing debate over the direction of Toyota's environmental policies and its position in the global shift towards electric vehicles.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has expressed concern over the collapse of a section of I-95

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has pledged to assist in the rapid repair of a section of Interstate 95 (I-95) on the East Coast, following its collapse in Philadelphia. Buttigieg expressed concerns that the destruction of the highway will likely increase the cost of consumer goods, as truckers are now required to take longer routes. The incident has caused significant disruptions to traffic and is expected to impact shipping costs along the East Coast.

Buttigieg emphasized the importance of I-95's full restoration and noted that alternative routes are being utilized by the trucking industry. The closure of I-95 is expected to have a significant economic impact, affecting commerce and supply chains. πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¦ OPEC data suggests that Saudi Arabia's decision to reduce oil output will tighten the oil market. Based on data from OPEC, Saudi Arabia's decision to cut oil production is expected to significantly tighten global markets in July 2023. Even before the announcement of the production cuts, OPEC had projected a rapid depletion of world inventories in the second half of the year due to a recovery in fuel demand. With the 1 million barrel-a-day reduction to be implemented by Saudi Arabia in July, the supply shortfall will intensify, resulting in global consumption exceeding supply by approximately 2.7 million barrels a day. If the production cuts are extended for the entire third quarter, it would mark the largest deficit since 2021.
