Biden Commits to Advancing Pacific Trade Pact Amid Labor Rights Challenges at APEC Summit
U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his commitment to advancing a Pacific trade pact despite challenges related to strengthening workers' rights. At the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in San Francisco, hopes for an Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) trade deal were dashed as members could not agree on labor and environmental standards.
The U.S. and its Indo-Pacific partners plan to recalibrate their trade negotiations early next year. Biden also signed agreements on supply chain resilience, clean energy, and anti-corruption measures during the summit, emphasizing the importance of stable U.S.-China relations for global stability.

Auto Workers Secure 11% Pay Increase in New Contracts at Ford, Stellantis, and General Motors
Union members at Ford, Stellantis, and General Motors have ratified a new 4½-year contract, securing an 11% pay increase after a six-week strike in September and October. The United Auto Workers (UAW) announced that roughly 67% of Ford employees represented by the UAW voted in favor of the contract, which will be in effect until April 30, 2028. Similar contracts are being voted on at Stellantis and General Motors, with results expected soon. These contracts also restore cost-of-living adjustments and grant workers the ability to reach top wages in three years instead of eight, while preserving their right to strike over plant closures.
