We have their attention: Congress recognizes trucking workforce

Good morning! It’s Monday - let’s get ready to roll. And remember…

“Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

– Will Rogers, American actor

The House of Representatives Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) spoke highly of truckers at a Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing last week. The comments are strikingly different after earlier in 2022, truckers were shunned as large swaths protested vaccine mandates that required boarder-crossing between Canada and the United States. Today, they are praised as “heroes”.

Toyota Motor’s CEO Akio Toyoda has remained steadfast on the company’s electric vehicle strategy, despite criticism that the company’s plans are not ambitious or quick enough. Toyota has insisted that the complete public adoption of electric vehicles will happen later than some policymakers think it will, and the company plans on serving their customer with a variety of vehicles.

Toyota also cites that not every part of the world will adopt the same green energy policies as California and New York.

🇭🇰 Fear not, Hong Kong will continue to reopen. At least, until another variant of the virus emerges. That’s the message from Secretary for Health Lo Chung-Mau, the city’s top health official, as they look to ease concerns that rules will continue to cripple the city’s supply chain operations. Hong Kong’s goal is to not cause an outbreak in the rest of mainland China and with some experts predicting new variants on the horizon, the officials are doing little to reassure worries. 🇬🇧 No longer is electric charging a “cheaper” option than gasoline, at least when it comes to money. The United Kingdom is aiming to ban the sale of new diesel and gas-powered vehicles by 2030, however public chargers are starting to cost as much as filling up at the gas station. Some fear that these growing costs are disincentivizing consumers from switching to electric vehicles. (CNBC)

More topics for the average American household to consider…

🗽 New York is likely to follow California’s lead. New York Governor Kathy Hochul is urging policymakers to expedite the processes needed to ban the sale of new gas-powered vehicles in the state by 2035. If passed, the regulations would require a growing percentage of vehicles sold every five years to be electric-powered vehicles. New York has also announced it plans to reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions by 85% but the year 2050. (CNBC)

⛈ Florida was hit hard by Hurricane Ian last week and the damage was catastrophic. The Category 4 storm made landfall in southwest Florida and flooded many areas along the Gulf Coast. 🧳 Florida and Texas are hotbeds for entrepreneurs, but why? Mostly for tax reasons. Policymakers should be concerned that top earners of states with high taxes, such as California and New York, are losing more households making over $200k per year than gaining them. For example, the IRS reported that these high earners made 7% of interstate movers in 2020, but accounted for 41% of all the income that was moved from state-to-state. California’s top 1% of earners pay almost half of the state’s income taxes. (Cato Institute)
