Move aside, LA. The Port of NY & NJ is now number one in the U.S.

Good morning! It’s International Teachers Day. 🍎 Remember…

"Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher." And great teachers can be found in all walks of life, at all times!

There has been a sharp plummet in import and export containers moved at the Los Angeles mega-ports. Long Beach handled 807,000 containers in August in second place and Los Angeles came in third with 805,000. In the number one spot is the Port of New York and New Jersey, handling a whopping 845,000 TEUs. That is an 8% increase for the port compared to 2021.

Labor talks on the west coast seem to have diverted many shipments in fear of work disruption. But the backlog on the East and Gulfs Coasts are also growing steadily… can they handle the influx?

Check out today’s featured article from More Than Shipping to read about the major growth at the Port of New York and New Jersey, surpassing the Port of Los Angeles as the busiest port in the United States. Will they retain the title? Or will the Port of Los Angeles gain back the lead? ☕️

Remember the Freedom Convoy? What happened to that?

In the cold winter streets of Ottawa, Canada in late January 2022, a convoy of truckers that called themselves “The Freedom Convoy” rolled into town. The truckers were taking a stand against required Covid-19 vaccine passport mandates for traveling over borders, as well as a number of other regulatory issues that had plagued the industry for years. This was just the breaking point.

The results were mixed but organizers believe the blockade won lots of positive press from the United States. However, the blockades also prepared the Canadian government with the means to possibly prevent further disruptions in the future.

$1.5 billion BNSF intermodal hub being built in Barstow, CA

California’s High Desert is the home of a new BNSF project - a $1.5 billion intermodal complex meant to relieve some of the congestion at the west coast ports. The Barstow International Gateway will include an intermodal facility, warehouses for translating, and a rail yard. The journey to the future rail yard will be about 130 miles and should improve efficiency as had been reflected in similar hubs in Texas.

Both the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach have voiced their support for the project. Both westbound and eastbound freight will be moved through the facility.

🇦🇺 Australia is seizing the opportunity. Currently, the country is set up to absorb 20% of the world's lithium refining capacity within the next five years. Locally-mined lithium ore is set to be modified into battery-grade chemicals with the construction of several refineries down under. Currently, China produces over 80% of the globe’s lithium hydroxide. If the projections are correct, lithium will become one of Australia’s top commodities - surpassing wheat and beef. (AJOT)
