Americans Are Misjudging Economy, Per Biden Administration

A recent Harris poll for The Guardian reveals widespread misconceptions about the U.S. economy. Most Americans (56%) believe the country is in a recession, but it's not. Nearly half (49%) think the stock market is down for the year and unemployment is at a 50-year high—both incorrect. Additionally, 72% think inflation is rising, which is also wrong.

These misunderstandings are troubling for President Biden, whose approval ratings on economic management are low. Democrats are struggling to correct these perceptions. Many Americans associate their financial struggles with a recession, and stagnant real incomes have worsened their living standards. The Biden administration's frequent, inaccurate claims about the economy have further eroded public trust.

Contrary to Biden's statements, when he took office in early 2021, the economy was growing, and inflation was low. Inflation surged due to unprecedented stimulus spending, not corporate greed. Despite Biden's claims of creating 15 million jobs, only about 6 million new jobs have been added since February 2020. The labor participation rate remains below pre-pandemic levels.
