Close Encounter Over South China Sea Adds to Tensions in Ongoing U.S.-China Aircraft Incidents

A Chinese fighter jet came dangerously close to a U.S. B-52 bomber during a routine operation over the South China Sea, with the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command expressing concern about the near-collision. This incident is part of a series of over 180 "unsafe" and "unprofessional" encounters between U.S. and Chinese military aircraft since fall 2021, according to the Department of Defense. China and the United States have differing perspectives on the South China Sea, with China claiming most of it as its territory, while the U.S. and other countries assert that it is international airspace.
