Global Agreement on Fossil Fuel Transition Falls Short of Full Phase-Out, but Marks Significant Progress


Government ministers from nearly 200 countries reached an agreement, known as the UAE Consensus, that calls for a transition away from fossil fuels. The deal, which followed heated debates and negotiations, aims to accelerate efforts to phase down unabated coal power, triple global renewable energy capacity, and double energy efficiency improvements by 2030. However, it does not mandate an absolute phase-out of hydrocarbons, which disappointed some climate activists who had hoped for a more stringent commitment to ending fossil fuel use. The agreement is seen as a significant step forward but falls short of completely ending the fossil fuel era.
