Massive Pileup in Louisiana's 'Super Fog': 7 Dead, 25 Injured, and Hazardous Materials Involved
On Monday, a series of crashes involving over 150 vehicles occurred on Interstate 55 in Louisiana's St. John the Baptist Parish, resulting in at least seven fatalities and more than 25 people being hospitalized with various injuries. The crashes were attributed to "super fog," an exceptionally dense fog caused by a combination of fog and smoke from nearby wildfires. Some vehicles caught fire during the initial collisions, including a tanker truck carrying a hazardous liquid, complicating the response efforts. First responders faced significant challenges due to the gridlocked traffic caused by the accidents. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards urged caution and offered prayers for the victims while emphasizing the importance of blood donations to support medical care for the injured. The "super fog" phenomenon is expected to be less severe on the following day due to stronger winds.
Early Tuesday morning, a series of at least five crashes occurred on Interstate 10 outside New Orleans, resulting in at least one fatality and eight injuries.
