Memorial Day BBQ Costs Rise… So Prepare to Spend More

Planning a Memorial Day barbecue? Get ready to spend more than last year. A WalletHub analysis reveals that this year's typical cookout will cost around $30, a 10% increase from 2023. Key barbecue items like ground beef, hot dogs, steak, and beer have all seen price hikes, driven by inflation.

Steak prices jumped 0.3% in April and are up 6.5% from last year. Ground beef also rose 0.3% in April, now 6% more expensive than a year ago. Beer prices increased by 0.7% in April, with a 3% year-over-year rise. While hot dog prices dropped slightly by 1.1% in April, they are still 7.1% higher than last year. Condiment prices are up 1.5% from last month and 3.6% from a year ago.

Over half of Americans plan to barbecue this year, but they'll feel the pinch of inflation, which remains high despite a decrease from its June 2022 peak. Overall, Americans are paying significantly more for groceries, rent, and energy compared to previous years, with the typical household spending $227 more per month than a year ago due to inflation.
