Near-airplane crash in Austin, Texas last month being investigated by federal officials

In February, a FedEx cargo plane narrowly missed a Southwest Airlines jet by passing over the plane on the jetway. Due to freezing fog, the FedEx pilots were unable to see the Southwest plane until they were within 100 feet of each other, according to The National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy. This harrowing incident paired with similar close calls in New York, California, and Hawaii have led investigators at the Federal Aviation Administration to gather together for a “safety summit” and discuss what could be the root of the problem.

The airspace around airports is a complex and dynamic environment, with multiple planes arriving and departing at different times, using various runways and taxiways. Pilots must follow strict guidelines and procedures to ensure safe and efficient operations and avoid potential collisions with other aircraft. One of the key ways that aviation safety is ensured is through the use of air traffic control (ATC) systems and procedures. ATC controllers use a range of tools and technologies, including radar, communication systems, and flight information displays, to monitor and manage the flow of traffic in and out of airports. They provide pilots with instructions on where to taxi, takeoff, and land, and ensure that planes are spaced apart at safe distances. In addition, aviation safety is also ensured through rigorous training and certification programs for pilots, air traffic controllers, and other aviation personnel. These programs emphasize the importance of following established procedures, maintaining situational awareness, and communicating effectively to prevent accidents and incidents.
