“Ports for People” campaign pushes for Port of LB green energy transition

The Port of Long Beach is currently juggling plans to allow the development of new fossil fuel gas stations at the port, sparking protests from local environmentalists. Pacific Environment, an environmental organization that works to protect the environment and promote sustainability in the Pacific Rim region, has launched the “Ports for People” campaign to challenge the port’s plans. The media campaign will aim to challenge “greenwashing” claims associated with liquefied natural gas (LNG), a fossil fuel that is 85-95% methane.

What is the problem with Liquified Natural Gas?

Environmentalists believe that liquefied natural gas (LNG) is greenwashing because it is often presented as a "clean" or "green" alternative to fossil fuels, despite its negative environmental impacts. The production and transportation of LNG result in significant greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane emissions, which are known to be even more potent than carbon dioxide in contributing to climate change. LNG production involves extracting natural gas from the ground, transporting it through pipelines, and then liquefying it, which requires a significant amount of energy. This process results in significant emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, contributing to global warming and air pollution.

Overall, while LNG may be considered a cleaner fossil fuel compared to coal and oil, environmentalists believe that it is not a truly sustainable or green energy source and that it should not be promoted as such. Instead, they advocate for a rapid transition to renewable energy sources and energy efficiency measures to address the urgent global challenge of climate change.

Who is Pacific Environment?

Pacific Environment focuses on a range of environmental issues, including climate change, marine and freshwater conservation, biodiversity, and air and water pollution. The organization partners with local communities, governments, and other environmental organizations to promote sustainable practices, protect wildlife and ecosystems, and advocate for policy changes that support environmental protection. Pacific Environment engages in a variety of activities, including research, policy analysis, advocacy, and public education. The organization also conducts campaigns, organizes events and actions, and provides resources and tools to support individuals and organizations working on environmental issues in the region.
