Can we blame the supply chain for the price of eggs?

Good morning! On this beautiful National Bagel Day, we hope you enjoy a delicious breakfast. But speaking of breakfast… have you been passing on buying eggs for the past few weeks? Because the egg supply chain is really egg-cellent, it's always cracking with efficiency!

Well, until lately.

The prices of eggs have skyrocketed lately, and people are noticing. But is the supply chain to blame? The egg supply chain refers to the process of getting eggs from the farm to the consumer. This process typically involves several stages: egg production, collection, grading, transportation, distribution, retail, and finally… delicious consumption. Ultimately, the cost of feed for the chickens who lay the eggs, growing retail margins, and the willingness of customers to pay a premium for better-quality food are all key components in the egg-flation.

Packaging industry standards are changing to become more sustainable

Packaging regulations are on the rise for industries on a mission to practice sustainability. Landfills are full of packaging for US consumers’ food and beverages - accounting for nearly half of the garbage. The Plastic Minimum Content Standards law took effect in California, which requires all plastic beverage containers in the state’s bottle deposit program to contain a minimum of 15% recycled content. The percentage will increase over the next ten years to at least 50% by 2030.

Sustainable packaging is important in the food industry for a number of reasons. Traditional packaging materials such as plastic and Styrofoam are not biodegradable and can take hundreds of years to decompose, leading to pollution and harm to wildlife and natural habitats. Sustainable packaging materials, on the other hand, are made from renewable resources and are biodegradable, reducing the environmental impact of packaging waste. Additionally, this type of packaging requires fewer resources and in the long run, can be more cost-effective for food companies as it reduces waste and the need for disposal, and can also help to reduce costs associated with environmental compliance.

Step it up, senior management! Sustainability is up to you

Amazon Business recently conducted a study that involved researching employees across Europe of all ages. The question of sustainability was asked - do employees want more sustainable products available for their own use? A total of 47% said that sustainable purchasing is important for real change, but less than a third said that they actually consider this when purchasing items for themselves.

Sourcing guidelines pertaining to sustainability in the supply chain generally focus on ensuring that the products and materials being sourced are produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. These guidelines may include requirements for suppliers to reduce their carbon footprint, conserve natural resources, and minimize waste. They may also include guidelines for fair labor practices, such as safe working conditions and fair wages. Additionally, many sustainability sourcing guidelines include provisions for traceability, so that companies can track where their products and materials are coming from, and ensure that they meet sustainability standards throughout the supply chain.

Let’s Get Global 🌎

🚢 2022 proves to be the Port of Singapore’s second busiest year. Racking 37.3 million TEUs in 2022, the port’s minuscule decline of 0.7% compared to the previous year is just a blip on the radar. Regardless of reports of global container trade beginning to decline as demand slows, the volumes moving through the port have been hugely profitable. The Port of Singapore is one of the busiest and most important ports in the world. It is strategically located at the crossroads of major international shipping lanes and serves as a gateway to Southeast Asia. One of the main advantages of the Port of Singapore is its deep natural harbor, which allows it to accommodate large vessels, including supertankers and container ships. This, in combination with its advanced infrastructure, efficient logistics, and skilled workforce, makes it an ideal location for transshipment and container handling.
