In response to a severe drought plaguing the region, the Panama Canal Authority has recently enforced new shipping restrictions. The adverse impact of this drought has necessitated measures to mitigate potential risks and ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of the canal. Notably, these restrictions primarily affect container vessels navigating through the canal. As a result of the reduced water levels, larger vessels are now required to decrease their draft, which refers to how they sit in the water. To comply with this requirement, these ships must lighten their loads and significantly reduce the weight they carry.
