Car safety features are being quietly removed from new models amid semiconductor shortage

From blind spot monitors to proximity alerts, some safety features are being axed from new models of vehicles due to the semiconductor shortage. Electronic features such as fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation systems and touchscreen displays are also being removed in order to keep the assembly lines moving - but the safety featured removal has some very concerned.

While blind spot monitoring systems aren’t mandated by any governmental regulations, some have considered them now commonplace. Because of the chip shortage, some models that aren’t necessarily considered “low-spec” could be built and sold with fewer safety features than previous models.
