PFAS Contamination in U.S. Freshwater Fish Raises Health Concerns


Freshwater fish in the United States contain concerning levels of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as "forever chemicals," which accumulate in fish, posing a health risk to consumers, especially in rural, Indigenous, and low-income communities. At least 17 states have issued PFAS-related fish consumption advisories, but with no federal guidance, the standards vary significantly among states. Eating a single serving of freshwater fish can be equivalent to drinking water contaminated with high levels of PFAS for a month, raising health concerns for those who rely on fish for sustenance and cultural dishes.
