Hostage Crisis Unfolds as South African Miners Held Underground Amid Union Dispute
Workers at a South African mine were held underground for three days in what the police are investigating as a hostage situation. More than 500 miners at the Gold One mine were reportedly held by hostage-takers armed with weapons like clubs and mining tools amid a dispute between two trade unions, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu). Workers eventually escaped, and police are investigating the incident as a potential kidnapping. Amcu has accused the mine's management of colluding with NUM, while NUM has claimed its members were held against their will by "hooligans."
